Why dog years aren’t simply “times seven”
Dogs mature quickly early in life. We use the AAHA-hosted Zoetis 2019 age chart: all four size categories reach about 15 human years at age one and 24 at age two, then diverge. At age five, small, medium, large and giant dogs correspond to about 36, 37, 40 and 42 human years.
Choose expected adult size: small ≤20 lb, medium 21–50 lb, large 51–90 lb or giant >90 lb. For puppies, use their anticipated adult size. If a measured weight falls between the chart’s whole-pound bands, use your veterinarian’s size classification or compare the adjacent categories.
What the chart can and cannot tell you
This is not a breed-specific model, a health assessment or a lifespan prediction. The first three size charts end at age 20; the giant chart ends at 16. A birth origin of (0, 0) and straight-line interpolation before age one are explicit assumptions made by this calculator.
